THE POLLINATORS IN YOUR GARDEN
Pollinators are the allies behind the diversity of plants and herbs available to us. Without them, the world would look nothing like it does today. From the honeybees to the bumble bees, and hummingbirds, butterflies, bats, beetles, and all other insects and animals that are vital for the pollination of plant life. As herbalists, in tune with our natural world, it’s our responsibility to care for the pollinators that care for the herbal plants that heal us.
Pollinators need a steady supply of pollen and nectar throughout the year in order to survive and be healthy. You can help by growing a small plot in your yard or a potted garden on your windowsills and balconies of plants that also provide benefits for these living beings. Reconsider using any pesticides and chemicals that are harmful to these bugs and animals. Uprooting your lawn or raking all of the leaves also destroys natural habitats for these creatures. Many of the weeds you find growing in your garden are not only nutritional for our pollinators, they are for us as well.
When you’re planning your garden, do some research to discover native plants in your local area. Try to prioritize as much native plants as possible before adding additional herbs and plants to your garden.
